Get my free quote →Every new EV in the Philippines comes with the same first question: is the free portable charger in the trunk enough, or do you need a wall charger? The granny charger vs wall charger decision is one we help buyers with every week — and we’ll give you the honest version, not the sales version. For some owners, the granny charger really is enough. For others, it’s a daily frustration waiting to happen. Let’s figure out which one you are.
What Each One Actually Is
Granny charger (portable charger). The cable-with-a-box that comes free with most EVs. It plugs into a regular 220V household outlet on one end and your car’s Type 2 port on the other, delivering around 2–3kW. The name comes from the idea that it’s slow enough for charging at lola’s house — trickle charging, essentially.
Wall charger (wallbox). A dedicated unit mounted at your parking area, wired to its own circuit from your electrical panel. The common home spec in the Philippines is 7kW single-phase with a Type 2 connector. It requires professional installation by a licensed electrician.
Speed: ~2–3kW vs 7kW
The headline difference. A 7kW wall charger delivers roughly two to three times the power of a granny charger, and that gap plays out very differently depending on your car:
- Full EVs (Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, Sealion 7, and similar): on 7kW, a typical low-to-full charge takes around 5–8 hours — a clean overnight fit. On a granny charger, recovering a deep discharge can stretch beyond a single night, which means one long driving day can leave you starting tomorrow behind.
- Small-battery EVs (Seagull): the compact battery narrows the gap. Overnight granny charging typically covers city-driving needs. See our Seagull charging guide for specifics.
- Plug-in hybrids (Sealion 6 DM-i): the small PHEV battery typically reaches full overnight even at granny speeds — and there’s a gasoline engine as backup anyway.
Notice the pattern: the bigger the battery and the more you drive, the more the wall charger’s speed actually matters.
Safety: The Part People Underestimate
This is where we get serious, because it’s the least understood difference.
A granny charger asks a regular household outlet to deliver near its maximum load continuously for hours, day after day. Household circuits were designed for kettles and fans — intermittent loads, not marathon sessions. On a good-quality, grounded outlet with healthy wiring, granny charging is generally fine. But on a worn outlet, aging wiring, or a shared circuit, sustained load causes heat buildup at the connections — and heat is how electrical problems start. Never use an extension cord for EV charging, kahit “heavy duty” pa ‘yan.
A wall charger flips the safety equation. It runs on a dedicated circuit with a properly sized breaker and RCD protection, wired to Philippine Electrical Code standards and commissioned with safety testing. It’s not that wall chargers are magic — it’s that the entire circuit is purpose-built for exactly this continuous load, with protection devices standing guard. That’s what you’re really buying. Our electrical requirements guide covers what a compliant setup looks like.
If you do plan to granny-charge regularly: have a licensed electrician inspect the outlet and circuit first. It’s a small cost for real peace of mind.
Convenience: Small Daily Frictions Add Up
The granny charger routine: get it from the trunk (or storage), uncoil, plug into the outlet, plug into the car, then reverse it all in the morning — or leave it permanently occupying an outlet and lying across the garage floor. The wall charger routine: lift cable off holster, plug in, done. Two seconds.
That sounds trivial until you’ve done it 300 nights a year. Wall chargers also add practical extras: faster mid-day top-ups when plans change, tidier cable management, and (on smart units) scheduled charging and consumption tracking — though as we’ve said in our smart chargers article, smart features are nice-to-have rather than essential.
Cost: Free vs a Real Investment
No contest on paper — the granny charger comes free with the car. A wall charger setup means:
- Charger unit: around ₱15,000–₱50,000 for basic units; ₱40,000–₱70,000 for smart chargers
- Installation: quoted after a free site assessment for a minor/standard install (labor and standard materials; complex jobs like panel upgrades, long cable runs, or condo installs are quoted after a free site assessment)
So a realistic all-in figure starts at around ₱40,000+. That’s real money, and we won’t pretend otherwise. The counterweight: it’s a one-time cost on infrastructure that outlasts your current car, while making home charging — at around around ₱15 per kWh on Meralco versus ₱20–₱38 per kWh at public stations — as effortless as possible, which means you actually use it.
Our Honest Verdict: When Each One Is Enough
The granny charger is genuinely enough if:
- You drive a PHEV like the Sealion 6 — the small battery fills overnight anyway (see our Sealion 6 home charger guide)
- You drive a small-battery EV modest distances daily and can plug in every night
- Your outlet and wiring are verified healthy by a licensed electrician
- You’re a new owner still learning your usage patterns — start free, upgrade later if the friction bites
Get the wall charger if:
- You drive a full EV as your daily car — speed and consistency stop being optional
- Your mileage varies (long days happen) and you can’t afford to start mornings half-charged
- Your home wiring is older or outlet quality is questionable — a dedicated compliant circuit is the safer answer
- You value the plug-in-and-forget routine, or plan to keep EVs long-term
No pressure either way — an honest assessment of your car, mileage, and wiring answers this question better than any sales pitch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a granny charger safe to use every day?
On a good-quality, grounded outlet with healthy wiring, generally yes. The risk lives in worn outlets, old wiring, shared circuits, and extension cords. If you’ll granny-charge daily, have the circuit inspected by a licensed electrician first.
How much faster is a wall charger than a granny charger?
Roughly two to three times the power — 7kW versus about 2–3kW. In practice, that’s the difference between a reliable overnight full charge and possibly needing more than a night after a long driving day.
What does a wall charger setup cost in total?
The unit runs around ₱15k–₱50k (smart units ₱40k–₱70k), plus installation, quoted after a free site assessment, for standard installation covering labor and standard materials. Complex installs are quoted after a free site assessment.
Can I start with the granny charger and upgrade later?
Absolutely — many owners do exactly that. Live with the car for a month, learn your real charging needs, then decide. Just get your outlet checked before making it a daily habit.
