“How long does it take to charge?” It’s the first question every new BYD owner asks — and honestly, the answer depends on three things: which BYD you drive, how you charge it, and how empty the battery is when you plug in. This BYD charging time guide walks through the whole local lineup, from the tiny Seagull to the seven-seater eMAX 7, across the three charging options available to Filipino owners.

One important note before we start: all times here are approximate. Actual charging time varies with battery size, starting charge level, temperature, and the charger itself. Treat these as realistic ballparks, not stopwatch guarantees.

The Three Ways to Charge a BYD

1. Granny (portable) charger. The unit included with most BYDs. It plugs into a regular 220V household outlet and delivers around 2–3kW. It’s the slowest option and depends on the quality and condition of your outlet.

2. 7kW wall charger (wallbox). A dedicated home AC charger on single-phase power — the common home setup in the Philippines. From a low battery, most BYD models typically reach full in around 5–8 hours overnight. See our full BYD 7kW wall charger guide for features and costs.

3. Public DC fast charging (CCS2). Found at malls, gas stations, and charging hubs. Charging rates vary by station and by what each BYD model can accept, but sessions are measured in minutes to an hour or so rather than overnight — typically used to go from a low state of charge to around 80%.

Model-by-Model Overview

BYD Seagull

The smallest battery in the lineup means the shortest charging times across the board. On the granny charger, expect roughly an overnight session. On a 7kW wallbox, the Seagull typically fills comfortably within a few hours — often the quickest home-charging experience of any BYD here. We cover it in detail in our Seagull charging guide.

BYD Dolphin

A modest battery that pairs nicely with home charging. The granny charger can take a long overnight-plus session from empty, while the 7kW wallbox typically finishes well within a normal night’s sleep. DC fast charging tops it up in well under an hour in typical conditions.

BYD Atto 3

The best-selling compact SUV sits in the middle of the pack. On the granny charger, a full charge from low can stretch beyond a single night. The 7kW wallbox brings that down to a typical overnight window of around 5–8 hours. Public DC charging handles the usual low-to-80% session in roughly the time it takes to have a meal at the mall.

BYD Seal

The Seal’s larger battery means the granny charger genuinely struggles — a full charge can take considerably longer than one night. This is a car that clearly benefits from a 7kW wallbox, which typically completes a full charge overnight. On DC fast charging, the Seal supports higher charging rates than the smaller models, so public top-ups are relatively quick.

BYD Sealion 6 (DM-i Plug-in Hybrid)

Different animal entirely. As a plug-in hybrid, the Sealion 6 has a much smaller battery than the full EVs — so even the granny charger can typically replenish it overnight without drama. A wallbox makes charging faster and tidier, but it’s less essential here. And because there’s a gasoline engine as backup, charging time is never a stranded-car problem.

BYD Sealion 7

A larger SUV with a correspondingly larger battery. Like the Seal, it’s granny-charger-unfriendly from empty — plan on a wallbox for practical daily use, with typical overnight full charges. Its DC fast charging support makes road-trip top-ups reasonably quick.

BYD eMAX 7

The seven-seater family MPV. Bigger vehicle, meaningful battery, and a family schedule that usually can’t wait around — the 7kW wallbox is the natural fit, typically delivering a full overnight charge. DC fast charging covers the out-of-town runs to the province.

The Good News: Charging Time Rarely Matters Day to Day

Here’s the perspective shift that surprises most new owners. Charging from empty to full is rare. Most Metro Manila drivers cover modest daily distances — the daily commute, school runs, errands. That daily usage typically consumes only a fraction of the battery.

So your real-world routine looks like this: get home, plug in, and the charger only needs to replace what you used that day — often just an hour or two of actual charging on a wallbox. You wake up at 100% every single morning. ‘Yung feeling of never visiting a gas station again? That’s the actual daily experience.

Cost-wise, it’s sulit too: Meralco residential rates run around around ₱15/kWh (rates change monthly), versus ₱20–₱38/kWh at public charging stations. Home charging is both the most convenient and the cheapest option — see our cost to charge at home breakdown for the math.

What Home Charging Setup Costs

A standard home wall charger installation costs quoted after a free site assessment for labor and standard materials, with the charger unit priced separately (basic units run ₱15k–₱50k; smart units ₱40k–₱70k). Complex jobs like panel upgrades, long cable runs, or condo installs are quoted after a free site assessment. Every MOEV install includes load evaluation, PEC-compliant materials, a dedicated breaker with RCD protection, and commissioning with your car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which BYD charges the fastest at home?

The Seagull, simply because it has the smallest battery. On a 7kW wallbox it typically finishes in just a few hours. The Sealion 6 PHEV is also quick to top up thanks to its small hybrid battery.

Is it bad to charge my BYD every night?

No — plugging in nightly and topping up is the normal, intended usage pattern for home AC charging. Follow your owner’s manual guidance on day-to-day charge limits.

Why is my granny charger so slow?

It’s limited to around 2–3kW from a household outlet — roughly a third of a wallbox’s speed. It’s designed as a backup, not a daily solution for the bigger-battery models.

Do I really need DC fast charging?

Only for road trips or emergencies. For daily driving around the metro, overnight AC charging at home covers virtually everything, at a much lower cost per kWh.
