BYD Atto 2 and Seal 5: What Charger Do They Actually Need?

Two new BYDs, two completely different charging answers.

BYD Cars Philippines launched the Atto 2 and the updated Seal 5 DM-i at the end of July, both with introductory pricing running to August 31. Between them they cover a lot of the entry-level electrified market right now, and we have already had showroom-floor questions land in our inbox: anong charger ba ang kailangan ko?

The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which one you buy — and for two of the three powertrains, a 7kW wall charger is money you do not need to spend. Here is why.

The short version

ModelBatteryMax AC chargingWhat you need at home
Atto 2 EV45.1 kWh7kW (Type 2)A 7kW wall charger
Atto 2 DM-i7.9 kWh3.3kW (Type 2)A proper dedicated outlet or a basic wallbox
Seal 5 DM-i7.42 kWh3.3kW (Type 2)A proper dedicated outlet or a basic wallbox

Why the plug-in hybrids cap out at 3.3kW

This is the part that surprises people. Both the Atto 2 DM-i and the Seal 5 DM-i have an onboard charger rated at 3.3kW, and neither supports DC fast charging at all. The onboard charger is the bottleneck — it sits inside the car and converts AC from your wall into DC for the battery. If the car can only accept 3.3kW, then feeding it 7kW achieves nothing. The car simply will not draw it.

So if a salesperson or an installer tells you your Seal 5 DM-i needs a 7kW wallbox to charge properly, that is not correct. BYD’s own figures put the Seal 5 DM-i at roughly 2.5 hours from 15% to full, and the Atto 2 DM-i at about 2 hours — both on 3.3kW. Those are already short enough that halving them would change nothing about your evening.

We would rather tell you this now than sell you a unit you cannot use. It is the same logic we apply to the Sealion 6 DM-i, which sits in the same plug-in hybrid category.

The Atto 2 EV is the one that actually wants 7kW

Different story here. The Atto 2 EV carries a 45.1kWh Blade battery rated at up to 380km, and it accepts the full 7kW over Type 2 — BYD quotes about 7.4 hours from empty to full. That is a textbook overnight charge. Plug in after dinner, wake up to a full battery.

Try the same thing on the portable granny charger that comes in the boot and you are looking at roughly triple the time — which pushes a full charge well past a single night. For a battery this size, the wall charger is not a luxury item. We cover the tradeoff in detail in our granny charger vs wall charger comparison.

The Atto 2 EV also supports CCS2 DC fast charging for road trips, but that is a public-network feature. It has no bearing on what you install at home.

The catch with plug-in hybrids nobody mentions

Here is the thing about a PHEV: the small battery is only an advantage if you actually plug it in every single day.

The Seal 5 DM-i gives you about 55km of electric range, the Atto 2 DM-i about 45km. For a lot of Metro Manila commutes that covers the whole day on electricity — which is exactly where the savings live, at roughly around ₱15/kWh at home versus buying gasoline. But miss a few nights and the petrol generator takes over, and you are driving a heavy hybrid on fuel. A plug-in hybrid that never gets plugged in is just an expensive ordinary car.

Which means for a DM-i, the thing that matters is not charging speed — it is charging convenience. A safe, dedicated, properly installed point within cable reach of where you park, so plugging in is automatic and not a chore. That is a much cheaper install than a 7kW unit, and it is the one that will actually get used.

What this means for your installation

Whichever of the three you pick, the electrical work still has to be done properly. Even a 3.3kW draw runs for hours at a stretch, and continuous load is precisely what the Philippine Electrical Code’s rules on dedicated circuits, cable sizing, RCD protection and earthing exist to handle. What changes between an EV and a DM-i is the circuit rating and the hardware — not whether you need a licensed electrician.

One practical note: if you are buying a DM-i now but might move to a full EV later, tell your installer. Sizing the circuit for a future 7kW unit during the first install costs far less than pulling new cable in two years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a 7kW wall charger for the BYD Seal 5 DM-i?

No. The Seal 5 DM-i’s onboard charger is limited to 3.3kW, so it cannot draw more than that no matter what you install. A properly installed dedicated point is enough.

How long does the BYD Atto 2 EV take to charge at home?

About 7.4 hours from empty to full on a 7kW Type 2 wall charger, per BYD’s figures — an overnight charge. The included portable charger takes considerably longer.

Can the Atto 2 DM-i or Seal 5 DM-i use DC fast charging?

No. Both plug-in hybrids are AC-only. DC fast charging on the Atto 2 is exclusive to the full EV variant.

Can I still use public chargers with these models?

Yes — all three use the Type 2 connector, the Philippine AC standard, so they work on the public AC network. The DM-i variants will just charge at their 3.3kW ceiling.
