Get my free quote →Here’s a question we get almost every week: “Do you need a wall charger for BYD, or is the free portable charger enough?” And here’s the honest answer most installers won’t lead with — for some owners, the included portable charger genuinely is enough. For others, a wallbox is one of the most sulit purchases they’ll make as an EV owner.
We install chargers for a living, so believe us when we say we have every reason to tell you to buy one. Instead, let’s walk through a real decision framework so you can figure out which camp you’re in.
What You Get for Free: The Portable “Granny” Charger
Most BYD models come with a portable charger in the trunk. It plugs into a regular 220V household outlet and delivers around 2–3kW — roughly a third of the speed of a 7kW wallbox. Depending on your model, a full charge from low can take a very long time, sometimes more than one overnight session for the bigger-battery cars.
It works. It’s free. But it has real limitations: it’s the slowest option, and — this is the part people underestimate — it depends entirely on the quality of the household outlet and the circuit behind it. An old outlet on a shared circuit, drawing near-continuous load for many hours, is exactly the scenario where worn wiring gets stressed. We compare the two options in depth in Granny Charger vs Wall Charger.
The Decision Framework: 5 Questions
1. How many kilometers do you drive daily?
This is the biggest factor. If you drive short distances a few times a week — say, weekend errands and the occasional trip — the granny charger can comfortably replace what you use. But if you’re a daily commuter covering serious distance across the metro, you’re depleting a larger share of the battery daily, and the slow trickle of a portable charger starts falling behind your usage. That’s when 7kW overnight charging earns its keep.
2. Which BYD do you own?
Battery size changes everything. A Seagull or a Sealion 6 has far less battery to fill than a Seal or Sealion 7. Small battery plus light driving equals granny-charger-friendly. Big battery plus daily driving equals get the wallbox.
3. PHEV or full EV?
If you drive the Sealion 6 DM-i plug-in hybrid, you have a built-in safety net: the gasoline engine. Its battery is small enough that the portable charger can typically refill it overnight, and even if you skip charging, you still get to work. Many Sealion 6 owners run happily on the granny charger alone. Full EV owners don’t have that fallback — charging isn’t optional, so charging speed matters more.
4. How good is your home’s electrical setup?
Be honest about this one. Is your outlet near the parking area in good condition? Is it on a lightly loaded circuit? Older homes with aging wiring are riskier candidates for many hours of continuous 2–3kW draw. Ironically, if your outlet situation is sketchy, that’s an argument for a wallbox on its own dedicated, properly protected circuit — not against it. Our guide on electrical requirements for home EV charging covers what “good enough” actually looks like.
5. What’s your budget right now?
A standard wallbox installation costs quoted after a free site assessment for labor and standard materials, with the charger unit priced separately (basic units run ₱15k–₱50k; smart units with app features, ₱40k–₱70k). Complex jobs — panel upgrades, long cable runs, condo installs — are quoted after a free site assessment. If that’s not in the budget this quarter, the granny charger will keep you moving in the meantime. The wallbox can come later; your car won’t mind waiting.
When the Portable Charger Is Honestly Fine
- You drive a Sealion 6 PHEV or a Seagull with light usage
- You cover modest daily distances and can plug in every night
- Your outlet is in good condition, on a healthy circuit, checked by a licensed electrician
- You have access to reliable public charging as backup
No shame in this setup. Plenty of owners run it for months, especially while deciding on a permanent charging plan.
When the Wallbox Is Clearly Worth It
- You drive daily and depend on the car — waking up to anything less than a full battery costs you flexibility
- You own a bigger-battery model (Seal, Sealion 7, eMAX 7, Atto 3 with heavy use) where the granny charger simply can’t keep pace
- You want scheduled charging to manage your kuryente costs — home charging at Meralco’s roughly around ₱15/kWh (rates change monthly) beats public rates of ₱20–₱38/kWh every time
- You want the safety of a dedicated circuit with its own breaker and RCD protection, instead of loading a household outlet for hours daily
- You plan to keep the car for years — the install cost spreads across thousands of cheap, convenient home charges
For daily drivers, that last point is the whole ballgame. ‘Yung convenience of never planning around charging again is hard to price — but the savings versus public charging are very easy to price. We run the full numbers in Is a Home EV Charging Station Worth It?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the BYD portable charger every day?
You can, provided the outlet and circuit are in good condition — ideally verified by a licensed electrician. For big-battery models driven daily, though, it may struggle to keep up with your usage.
Will skipping the wallbox damage my battery?
No. AC charging at 2–3kW is gentle on the battery. The tradeoff is purely about speed and convenience, not battery health.
How much does a BYD wall charger installation cost?
A minor or standard install is quoted after a free site assessment (labor and standard materials; charger unit separate). Complex jobs are quoted after a free site assessment.
Can I start with the granny charger and upgrade later?
Absolutely — many of our customers do exactly that. Nothing about using the portable charger first complicates a future wallbox install.
Still Not Sure? Let’s Look at Your Setup
