Figuring out where to mount your EV wall charger sounds simple — until installation day, when the cable doesn’t reach your charge port, or the spot you picked catches rain every habagat season. Location affects safety, convenience, and even your installation cost. As installers working across Metro Manila and nationwide, here’s how we help owners choose the right spot the first time.

Garage, Carport, or Outdoor Wall?

Most Philippine homes fall into one of three setups, and each has its own considerations.

Enclosed garage. This is the ideal scenario. The charger stays protected from rain, direct sun, and dust. Temperatures are more stable, and there’s less risk of tampering or accidental damage. If you have an enclosed garage, mount the charger on the wall nearest your car’s charge port, and you’re mostly set.

Covered carport. Very common in PH subdivisions, and still a good option. The roof handles most rain, but wind-driven rain during typhoons can still reach the unit — so weather rating matters (more on IP65 below). Mount the charger on a solid wall or post, ideally on the side away from prevailing rain.

Open outdoor wall. Sometimes there’s no roofed parking at all, and that’s okay — plenty of quality wall chargers are built for outdoor use. The key is choosing a properly rated unit, mounting it above realistic flood levels, and making sure the wiring is done to Philippine Electrical Code (PEC) standards with proper weatherproof fittings.

The Philippine Climate Factor: Rain, Heat, and Flooding

Our climate is tougher on outdoor electronics than most countries’ — heavy rain half the year, intense heat and humidity the rest, plus the occasional flood.

Look for IP65 or better. An IP65-rated charger is protected against dust and water jets from any direction. Most reputable wall chargers sold in the Philippines carry IP65, which handles our rain fine when mounted sensibly. What an IP rating doesn’t cover is submersion during flooding — which brings us to height.

Mount above flood level. If your street or garage has ever taken in water, mount the charger higher than the worst flood line you’ve seen, with margin. Chargers are typically mounted around chest height anyway for comfortable use, but in flood-prone areas we sometimes go higher and adjust the cable management accordingly.

Avoid all-day direct sun where possible. Heat degrades electronics over time and can cause some chargers to derate (charge slower) on scorching afternoons. A west-facing wall that bakes from 1pm to 6pm isn’t ideal. If it’s your only option, a small awning or drip shield over the unit is a cheap, worthwhile addition.

Cable Reach: Know Where Your Charge Port Is

Charge port location varies by car — some BYD models have it at the front fender area, others toward the rear. Before finalizing your mounting spot, park the car exactly how you normally park it and check where the port sits.

Most wall chargers come with a cable around 5 to 7 meters long. That sounds like a lot, but route it realistically — down the wall, around the car, up to the port — and it shrinks fast. A good rule: the mounting point should let the cable reach the port comfortably whether you park nose-in or reverse in, kasi you won’t always park perfectly, diba?

If you own two plug-in vehicles or plan to upgrade cars later, mounting near the middle of the parking bay gives you the most flexibility.

Distance to Your Electrical Panel = Cost

This is the part that directly hits your budget. Your wall charger needs a dedicated circuit from your main electrical panel — its own breaker, proper cable sizing, and RCD protection. The farther the charger sits from the panel, the longer the run, and the more materials and labor involved.

Our standard home installation is quoted after a free site assessment for labor and standard materials (the charger unit itself is priced separately). A mounting spot close to the panel usually keeps you comfortably in that range. A spot that requires a long run across the property, trenching, or routing through concrete walls can push the job into custom-quote territory — which is exactly why we do a free site assessment before quoting anything. You can read more about what drives pricing up or down in our guide to EV charger installation cost factors.

Sometimes moving the planned mounting point just two or three meters closer to the panel saves real money. That’s the kind of thing an assessment catches before any drilling starts.

Safety Clearances and Placement Basics

A few placement rules we follow on every install:

  • Height: typically around 1.2 to 1.4 meters from the floor to the unit — comfortable to reach, safely above minor water intrusion.
  • Clear of the car’s swing path. Don’t mount where an opening door or a misjudged parking maneuver can hit the unit.
  • Away from ignition sources and gas storage. Keep distance from LPG tanks, generators, and fuel containers stored in the garage.
  • Ventilation. Chargers generate heat during long sessions; avoid cramming the unit into a tight enclosed nook.
  • Cable management. A hook or holster keeps the cable off the floor — away from puddles, mud, and tripping feet.

All wiring must be done by a licensed electrician to PEC standards, with a dedicated breaker and RCD protection. This isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s what keeps a 7kW continuous load safe night after night. Our guide on electrical requirements for home EV charging covers this in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mount my EV charger outdoors with no roof at all?

Yes, as long as the unit is properly weather-rated (IP65 or better) and installed with weatherproof fittings by a licensed electrician. A simple drip shield adds extra protection and extends the unit’s life.

How high should an EV wall charger be mounted?

Around 1.2 to 1.4 meters from the floor is typical — easy to reach and above minor flooding. In flood-prone areas, we mount higher based on your property’s history.

Does the mounting location really change the installation price?

It can. Distance from your electrical panel is one of the biggest cost drivers. A short, direct cable run usually stays within the standard range; long runs or concrete penetrations may cost more, which we confirm during the free site assessment.

What if my parking spot has no nearby wall?

We can mount chargers on a sturdy post or pedestal. It adds some materials cost, but it’s a common solution for open driveways and detached parking areas.
