Get my free quote →If you just bought a BYD — or you’re about to — you’ve probably heard the dealer mention the BYD 7kW wall charger. It’s the home charging unit BYD offers alongside its EVs here in the Philippines, and for most owners it becomes the single most-used piece of equipment in their EV life. Plug in when you get home, wake up to a full battery. Simple, diba?
In this guide, we’ll walk you through what the BYD 7kW wall charger actually is, the features that matter, what it costs to install properly, and who really needs one.
What Is the BYD 7kW Wall Charger?
The BYD wallbox is a dedicated AC home charger rated at 7kW on single-phase power — the same electrical supply most Filipino homes already have. That 7kW rating is the sweet spot for home charging in the Philippines: fast enough to fully charge most BYD models overnight (typically 5–8 hours from a low battery), but light enough that it doesn’t require the three-phase power you’d only find in commercial buildings.
Compare that to the portable “granny” charger that comes in the trunk of most BYDs. That unit plugs into a regular 220V household outlet and delivers only around 2–3kW — roughly a third of the wallbox’s speed. It works, but it’s the slowest option, and it depends heavily on the quality of your household outlet.
Key Features Worth Knowing
Here’s what the BYD wallbox brings to the table:
- 7kW single-phase AC charging. Works with the standard residential electrical service found in most Metro Manila homes.
- Type 2 connector. This is the Philippine standard for AC charging, so the wallbox is compatible not just with BYDs but with virtually every EV sold locally. If you ever change cars, the charger stays useful. (More on this in our Type 2 charger explainer.)
- App connectivity on most models. Most BYD wallbox units include Wi-Fi and a companion app, letting you schedule charging sessions, monitor energy use, and start or stop charging remotely.
- Charge scheduling. This is quietly the most valuable feature. You can set the charger to run during off-peak hours, which helps you manage your kuryente bill and avoid charging during peak-rate periods.
- Built-in safety features. The unit itself includes protective electronics — but it still needs proper upstream protection (dedicated breaker, RCD) installed at your panel. The wallbox doesn’t replace a correct electrical installation; it depends on one.
How Much Does Installation Cost?
Here’s the honest breakdown. The charger unit and the installation are two separate costs.
Installation: A minor or standard home installation runs quoted after a free site assessment, covering labor and standard materials. That price includes what a full-scope install should: a site assessment, electrical load evaluation, PEC-compliant wiring and materials, a dedicated breaker with RCD protection, commissioning and safety testing with your car, and after-sales support.
Complex jobs — panel upgrades, long cable runs from your meter to your parking area, or condo installations — are quoted separately after a free site assessment, because every property is different.
The charger unit itself is priced separately. For market context, basic AC chargers in the Philippines range from ₱15,000–₱50,000, while smart units with app features typically run ₱40,000–₱70,000.
You may also see BYD dealer-referred basic installs quoted noticeably lower. That’s a legitimate option — just make sure you understand what’s included. Lower-priced packages often cover a simpler scope, while a full-scope installation includes the load evaluation, dedicated circuit protection, and commissioning steps listed above. We break down the differences in our BYD wall charger installation cost guide.
Who Is the BYD Wallbox For?
The 7kW wallbox makes the most sense if:
- You drive daily. Regular commuters who deplete a meaningful chunk of battery each day benefit most from fast overnight top-ups.
- You own a full EV (Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7, and similar). Bigger batteries take a long time on a granny charger — the wallbox turns a potentially very long session into a comfortable overnight one.
- You want charging you don’t have to think about. Scheduled charging plus a dedicated, protected circuit means you plug in and forget it.
- You want to charge at home rates. Meralco residential rates sit around around ₱15/kWh (rates change monthly), versus ₱20–₱38/kWh at public stations. Over months of daily driving, home charging is genuinely sulit.
If you only drive occasionally, or you own the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid with its smaller battery, the included portable charger might honestly be enough — we lay out that decision in Do You Need a Wall Charger for Your BYD?
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the BYD 7kW wall charger compatible with non-BYD cars?
Yes. It uses the Type 2 connector, which is the Philippine AC charging standard. EVs from MG, GAC, and most other brands sold locally can charge from it.
Does my home need special electrical work for a 7kW charger?
It needs a dedicated circuit with its own breaker and RCD protection, installed per the Philippine Electrical Code by a licensed electrician. Whether your panel can handle the added load is exactly what a site assessment determines.
How long does a full charge take on the 7kW wallbox?
Typically 5–8 hours overnight from a low battery, depending on your BYD model and battery size. Plug in at night, and you’re full by morning.
Can I just use the free portable charger instead?
You can — it delivers around 2–3kW from a household outlet, so it’s much slower and depends on your outlet’s condition. For daily drivers with full EVs, the wallbox is usually worth it.
